Britney Arendse is the first female athlete to represent Ireland in powerlifting at the Paralympics.

An Irish athlete who hails from the Northern Sound region will carry the Irish flag at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games opening ceremony this afternoon.

Britney Arendse, who was born in South Africa but now lives in Mullagh, Co. Cavan, has been chosen as the Irish team's flagbearer, alongside Killarney high-jumper Jordan Lee.

A life-changing road traffic collision in 2009 left Britney with spinal cord injuries and she now requires the use of a wheelchair.
