Companies are struggling to retain workers due to Ireland's housing shortage.

That's according to business group IBEC's latest report, which found the problem is having a significant impact on business operations.

The housing report published by IBEC found 70 per cent of companies in the country identified the availability of housing as a challenge to their business operations.

While 30 per cent of those surveyed called the challenge 'major'.

The business group claimed the issue is 'harming Ireland's attractiveness as a place to live' and poses the greatest threat to competitiveness at the moment.

IBEC says it wants to intensify work through the Labour Employer Economic Forum and see the delivery of affordable housing in the private market and through public provision.

It also says it wants to see set a more ambitious role for local authorities and Approved Housing Bodies, and the delivery of 20 thousand social, cost-rental and broader affordable homes before the end of the decade.
