Concerns about removal of safeguards in asylum reforms

"On initial reading of the bills, we see the provisions of family reunification have been removed, that should be a core protection measure."

Concerns are being raised about the removal of key safeguards from government reforms the asylum system.

A coalition of civil society groups is urging the Justice Minister not to rush through legislation around the EU Migration Pact, which is due come into effect in June.

Among their concerns are plans to set up detention centres for international protection applicants, shorten the timeline for appeals, and restrict access to legal representation.

John Lannon, CEO of Doras, says they're worried about how the pact is being transposed into Irish law:

"On initial reading of the bills, we see the provisions of family reunification have been removed, that should be a core protection measure," he said.

"One of our concerns is that the bill seems to go further than the EU path requires, in terms of restrictions. Many of the safeguards are not being transposed into Irish legislation," he added.
