Cost of living crisis the primary reason for teacher shortage says Cavan TD

'Teachers are not badly paid but there is a concern about teachers starting out who are not on full-time contracts'

A Cavan TD believes issues around housing and the cost of living are the primary causes for teacher shortages across the country.

According to Deputy Pauline Tully, the industry is at "crisis point" with some schools unable to offer certain subjects as they cannot get teachers in those areas.

Speaking in relation to talks earlier in the week over banning career breaks for teachers, Deputy Tully said many are leaving the country in order to save for a deposit on a home, something that many are unable to do while leaving in Ireland due to the cost of renting.

Deputy Tully added that there has been a lack of workforce planning in certain areas for a number of years and that better planning is needed to meet the demand required:
