Counting of votes in Cavan-Monaghan begins

The Cavan/Monaghan constituency will select five TD's to the new Dáil when all the votes are counted in the upcoming election

Sorting of votes has just gotten underway as boxes are opened from the 259 polling stations across Cavan and Monaghan.

There is a record 20 candidates contesting the Cavan/Monaghan constituency. Resulting in a much longer ballot paper than previous General Elections.

10 candidates are based in Co. Cavan; nine in Co. Monaghan and one is from outside the constituency Co. Sligo. The Cavan/Monaghan constituency will select five TD's to the new 34th Dáil.

The constituency includes the entire area of both County Cavan and County Monaghan, taking in areas like Cavan town, Monaghan town, Clones, Cootehill, Belturbet, Bailieborough, Castleblayney and Carrickmacross.

It previously included parts of North Meath. Cavan and Monaghan is predominantly rural with 75% of the population living outside the main towns.
