Jim Ryan says he was left with 'no other option' but to break Covid restrictions at the time.

A Roscommon couple believes they were "well within their rights" to attend Mass in Co Cavan last year, while travel restrictions were in place to help curb the spread of Covid-19.

Jim and Ann Ryan travelled 70km to attend Palm Sunday Mass at Mullahoran Church, which was in breach of the 5km travel limit in place at the time.

The couple were recently convicted of the offence at Cavan District Court, however they say they would both rather "go to jail" than pay the 300 euro fine.

Speaking with Joe Finnegan earlier today, Jim Ryan says he was left with "no other option" but to break Covid restrictions at the time, as no other Mass services were available to him within the 5km travel limit.

He added that Palm Sunday was a "very important" day in the Christian calendar and if his upcoming appeal is unsuccessful, he will go to jail and continue to "stand up for Jesus."
