'Action is needed urgently'

The chairman of the 'Enough is Enough' campaign has highlighted the importance of "cross-border relations" when it comes to getting road upgrades to the A5 and N2 over the finish line.

Niall McKenna believes there will be "cross border elements" when it comes to funding, adding that people living in the likes of North Monaghan are no different to those living in West Tyrone or East Donegal.

Speaking to Northern Sound, he believes the need for upgrades "cannot be avoided anymore" when it comes to securing road safety and preventing death on both sides of the border.

According to Niall, the N2 is a "dangerous road" and like the A5 is littered with crosses along the road to mark tragic fatalities which occurred in the past.

In his opinion, upgrades to the A5 between Derry and the border village of Aughnacloy will be part of a "broader" and potentially "cross-border" scheme.

Meanwhile, Cavan Monaghan Sinn Féin TD, Matt Carthy, has accused the Transport Minister, Eamon Ryan, of 'politically motivated discrimination' against County Monaghan as he continues to block progress on N2 road project schemes.

Deputy Carthy this week said that Minister Ryan has removed funding for projects that were prioritised in the National Development Plan and diverted it to projects that were not. "Only a political intervention from Minister Ryan's coalition partners can ensure that the road projects are advanced," he said.

The Sinn Féin TD said the position of Minister Eamon Ryan in stalling the projects will have a detrimental impact on the economic generation of this region, will raise road safety concerns and was unfair of the large number of landowners who have had their lands sterilised for several years.

He added that "the N2 road is a critical artery through the central Border region to the north west."
