At the weekend Cú Chulainn Blood Bikes in Monaghan was named National Lottery Good Cause of the Year.

The Cu Chulainn Blood Bikes based in Co Monaghan provides a swift but free volunteer service to hospitals in the HSE North Eastern Region of Ireland.

The service is provided throughout counties Monaghan, Cavan, Meath and Louth as well as linking-up with other Blood Bike Groups through-out the island of Ireland, including the important transportation of services to NHS facilities across the border in Co Fermanagh.

Speaking to Northern Sound, Derek Duffy, who is the managing director and chair of Cú Chulainn Blood Bikes described the local service as "essential" for those who are most vulnerable.

He also highlighted the importance of volunteers along with the help and support of the general public who keep this service alive through generous donations.
