Deputy Brendan Smith believes more must be done to remove drug use in society.

"Drugs are playing a poisonous and cancerous role in our society." That's according to Cavan Monaghan TD, Deputy Brendan Smith.

The local representative believes it is imperative that work is carried out to "cut off" the supply of drugs, but insists sufficient staffing levels within An Garda Síochána is needed for this to be achieved.

Speaking on this morning's Joe Finnegan Show, Deputy Smith highlighted how the role of a Garda has become "extremely difficult" over the years, citing abuse from the public as one of the many reasons for members leaving the force.

According to Deputy Smith, it is "absolutely ludicrous" that a fit and healthy person at the age of 35 cannot join the force, especially given the current recruitment and retention crisis.

Deputy Smith added that members of the public would be "more than welcoming" to the prospect of additional Gardaí "on the beat." However, the local TD also believes this is a worrying time for Gardaí in relation to staff morale and the lack of trust in Garda Commissioner Drew Harris.

"The availability of drugs is a problem," explained Deputy Smith. "Dealers are supplying to many good and decent people who are unfortunately getting addicted unless we as a society can cut off the supply of drugs.

"When Minister Harris was in Justice, I had questions to him in the Dáil in regards to what additional measures would be brought in to help Gardaí, some legislative measures have been changed, especially in terms of attacks on Gardaí but drugs are still playing a poisonous and cancerous role in our society.

"In terms of issues with retention and recruitment, it's absolutely ludicrous that a person of 35 who is fit and healthy cannot join the Gardaí. We have people who are shining in Croke park playing gaelic football or hurling who are 35 and over, but if they wanted to join the Gardaí tomorrow they couldn't - it's ludicrous."
