Legislation will come into effect in the coming weeks on the use of e-scooters.

A Monaghan Senator believes that new regulations on e-scooters will help "save lives." Fianna Fáil's Robbie Gallagher believes we have "all seen" the danger posed by unsafe use of e-scooters across local communities. Legislation will come into effect in the coming weeks on the use of e-scooters, including measures such as a ban on users under the age of 16. Speaking to Northern Sound, Senator Gallagher said that the introduction of a regulatory framework and an age limit is hugely welcome, however, a regulatory framework is only as strong as the enforcement behind it.

Senator Gallagher said he hopes to see "strong enforcement" of the regulatory framework and appropriate use of measures like Fixed Charge Notices to ensure that the use of e-scooters here in Ireland is as safe as possible.

He continued; "We have all seen in our local communities across the country the danger posed by unsafe use of e-scooters. It's a simple fact that the road is a shared space and people using e-scooters must take extra care to be safe on roads, whether in the countryside or in our villages or towns. The introduction of a regulatory framework and an age limit is hugely welcome, however, a regulatory framework is only as strong as the enforcement behind it."
