The Minister of State for Heritage and Electoral Reform, has announced over €1.4 million in funding for Local Authorities, including Cavan and Monaghan to carry out biodiversity projects through the Local Biodiversity Action Fund.

A total of almost €48,000 has been granted towards five different projects across county Cavan.

Meanwhile, €47,800 has been granted towards across a total of three projects in County Monaghan.

According to Minister Malcolm Noonan, the funding will go towards restoration, invasive species management, surveys, education and awareness projects:

Monaghan Biodiversity Awareness & Education This project aims to connect communities with their neighbouring farms in a supportive ways to build an understanding of the role of local land-use and biodiversity for sustainable communities.     Cavan and Monaghan counties are similar in terms of land use, habitats and type of farming enterprises. €10,000
Monaghan Pollinator The purchase of a min-grazer to cut and lift grass could be a game-changer for the improved management of verges and meadows right across the council area.  It would allow for additional areas to be brought into the programme and make AIPP practices the cultural norm in the organisation. €12,250
Monaghan Wetland Survey This two-year project will identify wetlands from the Monaghan Wetland Database of 711 sites, on which conservation works to improve biodiversity outcomes and climate mitigation/adaptation can be undertaken, in order to prioritise conservation effort and expenditure. €25,550

Cavan Biodiversity Awareness & Education This project aims to connect communities with their neighbouring farms in a supportive way to build an understanding of the role of local land-use and biodiversity for sustainable communities €10,200
Cavan Wetlands Survey A data consolidation study was undertaken in 2021 as part of phase 1 of this project.  Under Phase II further development of the wetland map will be undertaken in particular to map the extent of the potential wetland undertaken in 2021.  A targeted field survey of wetlands in County Cavan will be carried out to build on the preliminary inventory of wetlands compiled during CNWS 2021. €8,500
Cavan Biodiversity Awareness & Education Funding was secured through NBAP to undertake a new biodiversity plan for Cavan in 2021. This year's funding will:
• promote the launch of the plan through local media, a competition aimed at young people and communities throughout the county.  Funding will allow us to undertake a good, sharp, efficient PR campaign.
• Commission high quality images for the plan including interaction with biodiversity
• Establishment of a Biodiversity Steering Group to oversee implementation of the plan, funding will allow for a facilitator to work with group to establish vision, aims and terms of reference.

Cavan Biodiversity Awareness & Education This Project will undertake a programme of engagement with communities throughout Cavan to raise awareness of biodiversity.     Programmes will be inter-generational targeting school children and older people alike.  Projects will include:
Preparation of local biodiversity plans;
Continuation of the successful pollinator friendly towns and villages;
Vegetation Management within Historic Graveyards;
Creative response to responding to biodiversity through art and poetry culminating in an exhibition;
Targeting Invasive Species through community programmes

Cavan IAS Feasibility Study A feasibility study for the management of invasive species in County Cavan, which aims to consider the practicality of managing IAS on a county-wide basis specifically Nuttall Waterweed. €10,200
