Funding of €345,000 announced for local forest parks and outdoor facilities

Minister Heather Humphreys says the works will attract more visitors to the region.

Funding of €345,000 has been announced to enhance forest parks and outdoor facilities in Cavan and Monaghan.

Deerpark in Virginia receives the biggest allocation locally, with €200,000 going towards the construction of a new car park to serve the amenity.

Killykeen in Killeshandra will also get €49,000 to upgrade its toilet facilities.


Smaller works, involving sums of between €2,000 and €26,000, has also been allocated to ten other amenities across the Northern Sound region, including Rossmore Forest Park, Dún an Rí Forest Park, and Black Island, Castleblayney.

The funding is part of a new €15m strategic partnership between the Department of Rural and Community Development and Coillte.

Minister Heather Humphreys says the works will attract more visitors to the region and have benefits in terms of physical and mental well-being.

Larger Works

Deerpark/Headford, Virginia: €200,000 – Open new access point and install new car-park to serve Deerpark forest property


Killykeen, Killeshandra: €49,000 - Install upgraded toilet facilities


Smaller Works - Cavan


Bailieboro: €4,000 - General Maintenance of marked trails, cutting back of vegetation/ dangerous trees along paths.

Bawnboy: €2,000 - General Maintenance painting of signs and upgrade of map

Burren, Blacklion: €2,000: General Maintenance of trails, cutting trees back.


Castleterra, Cavan: €2,000: General Maintenance of trail, cutting back vegetation, paint barrier.

Dun an Ri Forest Park, Kingscourt: €21,000: General Maintenance of trails with gravel, update maps boards and put out new markers. Cutting of grass and collecting of litter.

Headford Deerpark, Virginia: €6,000: General Maintenance of trails applying gravel to weaker spots, picking of litter and new signage.

Killykeen Forest Park, Killykeen: €26,000: General Maintenance of trails; repairs to tar road, fix potholes in main car park. Cutting of grass and litter collection. upgrade of map inserts

Senator Billy Fox Memorial Park, Shercock: €2,000: General Maintenance


Smaller Works - Monaghan

Black Island, Castleblayney: €10,000 – General Maintenance

Dartry, Rockcorry: €9,000 - General Maintenance; removal of dangerous trees

Derrygorry Millenium Woodlands, Emyvale: €3,000 - General Maintenance, replace markers and paint seats.

Rossmore Forest Park, Monaghan: €9,000 - General maintenance of trees in park along trail network
