A Go Fund Me page has been set up as part of ongoing efforts to have a memorial erected at the site of the Orphanage fire disaster in Cavan.
The Cavan Orphanage Memorial Committee have launched the fundraiser in a bid to have a memorial in situ to remember the 34 children and one adult that lost their lives.
Today marks the 83rd anniversary of the fire that claimed so many lives and left children with life changing injuries.
The committee said funding is needed to bring this project to fruition and to honour those lost with a fitting memorial.
A dedicated voluntary committee is working in partnership with Cavan County Council, with funding support from the PEACE Plus Programme, which will contribute €10,000 towards the project. The committee said they are also grateful for the financial support being offered by the Poor Clare's and Double Property, who now own the site of the former orphanage.
Their contribution forms part of the overall funding for this memorial.
The total cost of creating a permanent and dignified memorial is estimated at approximately €70,000. The committee said every donation, no matter the size, brings them closer to ensuring that these children and their cook are properly remembered and honoured in the public space.
