Gardaí call for road safety after eight fatalities over long weekend

78 people have died on the nations roads so far this year.

Gardai are urging motorists to reduce their speed after 8 people lost their lives over the June Bank Holiday weekend.

Assistant Commissioner for Roads Policing, Paula Hilman, says the basics, such as reducing speed, can make a difference.

Monaghan's Road Safety Officer says people can't afford to become complacent.

Adrian O'Sullivan from Monaghan County Council was speaking after the tragedies over the weekend.

He said everyone has a responsibility to ensure that they follow the rules of the road and look out for other road users.

Adrian said people need to understand the dangers on the road.
