Gardaí in Cavan renew appeal into Belturbet bombing

Local Gardaí have identified new lines of inquiry into the bombing.

Gardaí in County Cavan have issued a renewed witness appeal into a loyalist car bombing that killed two children almost fifty years ago.

Officers have carried out a review of the initial investigation into the explosion in Belturbet and identified new lines of inquiry.

Shortly before half past ten on the night of December 28th, 1972, a car bomb exploded outside Farrelly's Bar on Main Street, Belturbet.

16 year old Patrick Stanley and 15 year old Geraldine O'Reilly were killed instantly - eight more people were injured.

Patrick was from Clara in County Offaly and was a keen sportsman, having recently won a GAA All Star award, he wanted to join the army.

Geraldine was local to Belturbet, she was very successful academically and was visiting the town for dinner with her brother Anthony.

Following a review of the investigation, local Gardaí have identified new lines of inquiry into the bombing.

A new Senior Investigative Officer has been appointed and an incident room set up at Ballyconnell Garda Station.

Local officers are calling on anyone who has information into the bombing that killed Patrick and Geraldine to get in contact there.
