A Virginia nursing home has been found to be non-compliant in two areas following an unannounced HIQA inspection.
St Joseph's Nursing Home, in Lurgan Glebe, Virginia, was subject to the inspection on the 4th of March.
St Joseph's Nursing Home provides 24- hour nursing care to 52 residents who require long-term and short-term care.
Feedback was positive from both residents and their families, with residents expressing feelings of contentment and happiness with living in the centre.
However, it was deemed to be non-compliant regarding its premises and fire precautions.
Although work was in progress to refurbish parts of the centre including residents' bedrooms and widening of corridors, the inspector said proactive and ongoing preventative maintenance required improvement.
Grab rails were missing from some residents' toilets and showers, tables and chairs in the residents' dining room were in a state of disrepair, and the floor surface in one twin bedroom occupied by two residents was cracked and uneven.
Meanwhile, records of simulated emergency evacuation drills did not provide assurances regarding residents' timely evacuation in the event of a fire or other emergency, and assurances regarding the containment of fire, fumes and smoke in the event of a fire were not available.
Since the inspection, St Joseph's Nursing Home says the necessary fire precaution assurances have been forwarded to the inspector and a Fire Safety Engineer has completed a full risk assessment and the report is available on site.
They say on-going maintenance also continues throughout the nursing home, new grab rails have been ordered, and residents in the twin room have been moved and this room is to be renovated.
The nursing home was also substantially compliant in nine areas, but these were risk-rated yellow, signifying a low risk.
A compliance plan has since been enacted to bring these judgements to full compliance.
