Longford County Council is seeking to re-establish cross county drainage boards with Leitrim and Cavan County Councils.

It follows a notice of motion from Fine Gael Councillors Paraic Brady and Garry Murtagh raised at Granard Municipal District regarding flooding of lands around the Rinn and Black Rivers and around the Lough Oughter and Lough Erne water system.

The two elected members said that previously, the cross county drainage schemes carried out work to clean rivers every three years but that this hasn't been carried out now since 2008.

Longford County Council's Environment section has confirmed to the meeting that it will write to Cavan and Leitrim County Councils to seek the re-formation of the boards.

However, in a response read out to members, it says that if any urgent local need arises, funds should be set aside under the general municipal district allocation.
