It's hoped a Divisional Protective Services Unit will be set up in Cavan and Monaghan in the coming months.

The specialised units investigate sexual crime, human trafficking, child abuse and domestic abuse.

Chief Superintendent John O'Reilly told Cavan's Joint Policing Committee today that the unit would be made up of two Sergeants and 10 Gardaí based across the two counties.

It comes as figures show an increase in the number of domestic violence incidents in Cavan.

Today's meeting, which was held online, heard there has been a significant increase in domestic violence incidents in the county.

Figures for the first quarter of the year show 92 domestic incidents in the county, up from 87 last year.

Chief Superintendent O'Reilly said it's hoped Cavan-Monaghan will be successful in its bid to set up the unit, with a decision expected later this summer.
