Local fears have emerged over the supply of Irish turkeys this Christmas.

The IFA has issued a 'red alert' to poultry producers after a case of avian flu.

A post mortem examination has confirmed the presence of a virulent strain in swans found dead in Cavan last week.

The disease has caused havoc across Europe, with culls of poultry ordered in a number of countries, including in the UK.

It's raised concerns about the supply of turkeys this Christmas, as the majority of them come from the Cavan/Monaghan region, where the swan was found.

The Department of Agriculture is set to advise farmers to keep poultry indoors from next week.

Poultry Vice Chair of the Irish Farmers Association, Brendan Soden, says they are closely monitoring the situation.
