Monaghan GAA has confirmed to Northern Sound that both the GAA and Gardai are investigating a 'violent incident' that occurred between a handful of Monaghan and Armagh fans during Saturday's All-Ireland quarter final clash in Croke Park.
The local county board told the Joe Finnegan Show that it was behaviour that would not be tolerated in the sport.
Also speaking on the show, well-known local GAA coach Frank Brady, and the Cathaoirleach of Monaghan County Council, David Maxwell, condemned outright the behaviour of those who were among the crowd on Hill 16.
Cllr Maxwell highlighted how "disappointing" it was to see a small number of people behave in such a manner when the conduct of the thousands of people in attendance from both counties was exemplary.
He pointed to the matter of segregating fans - which has been discussed in the last few hours in light of the incident - and added how detrimental it would be to the game if that were to be introduced.
Meanwhile, Mr Brady said that while the incident was "unfortunate and disgraceful", it was "small and isolated carried out by youngsters who couldn't hold their drink".
He pointed to how "the rigours of the law" would deal with the matter accordingly and highlighted how in his 60 years of going to GAA matches, he never saw anything like Saturday's incident.
Mr Brady added that the focus is now on Monaghan minors who are out against Derry this weekend in the All-Ireland Minor Football Final.
