A local TD doesn't believe the Government should sign up to the EU migration pact.
It's estimated around 50 to 70 percent of international protection applicants have arrived in Ireland after seeking asylum from another EU member state. The Government has approved opting into the EU's Pact on managing migration, which is due to come into effect in 2026. The Justice Minister confirmed a further eight countries are being reviewed to be designated as "safe countries." Ten nations are currently on the Department of Justice's list of safe countries. It aims to reduce waiting times for applications decisions to six months, with a fast tracked process for those who arrive without travel documentation.
