The Minister for Transport has announced nationwide funding of close to €73 million under a new rural Active Travel Investment Programme.

Local Authorities in the Northern Sound region will benefit from funding of just under €6.3 million under the scheme.

The National Transport Authority had originally earmarked €50 million for this scheme, but that figure has increased to over €70 million due to the number of project proposals by local authorities.

Today's funding announcement has been labelled "the first ever major active travel investment for rural Ireland" and Transport Minister Eamon Ryan says he hopes the funding will "make walking and cycling attractive, safe and accessible to everyone".

Locally, Cavan will receive funding of €2.31 million to fund 14 projects.

Monaghan will benefit from just under €4 million in funding, which will go towards 23 projects.
