As part of the "Hopefull Handbags Global" autumn appeal, locals are asked to fill handbags with real essentials and hope for survivors of domestic abuse.
Members of the Cavan and Monaghan Mums in Business Community took part in this appeal and as a result have organised a coffee morning which will take place tomorrow from 11am to 1pm in the library at the Monaghan Peace Campus.
Speaking to Northern Sound, local business woman Zandra Montgomery says this campaign addresses a critical gap in support services.
Zandra says many women who flee domestic abuse often leave with nothing, no identification, no money and no basic necessities.
According to the Newbliss woman, the handbags provide immediate and practical support while opening conversations about longer-term assistance and giving hope for a brighter future.
She has encouraged members of the public to come along to tomorrow's event in support of women's refuges and services. Zandra told Northern Sound: "Every handbag carries more than toiletries, it carries recognition, dignity, and the message that you are not forgotten. That unused bag in your wardrobe or in the cupboard under the stairs will carry more than you think. It could be the key to someone's fresh start, their life after abuse, their hope for tomorrow."
This season's request for collection includes:
● New and once loved handbags in good condition
● Full-size toiletries (shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, lotion, toothpaste)
● Personal care items (hairbrushes, razors, tampons, pads, hand sanitiser)
● New underwear and socks (wrapped)
● Comfort items (makeup, pens, journals)
● A handwritten note - one sentence of support can provide immeasurable comfort
