The local politician noted that 96% of the road network in Cavan are local and regional roads.

The longer roads are allowed to deteriorate for, the bigger the bill for local authorities.

That's according to Cavan-Monaghan TD, Brendan Smith, who recently raised the need for more investment in local roads to the Minister for Transport. The local politician noted that 96% of the road network in Cavan are local and regional roads.

The TD also stressed the importance of maintaining the roads as incessant rainfall across the area's drumlin soil has proven to cause damage even to relatively good roads. Speaking in the Dáil last week, Brendan Smith insisted on more government investment to upkeep rural roads:
