Local Cllr calls for resolution to school secretary dispute

"One's education is a short period in their life. It does not need any disruption."

A local councillor has raised his concerns about the industrial dispute involving school secretaries and caretakers.

Last September, the trade union representing secretaries and caretakers went on strike, demanding parity and public sector pensions.

Talks between the Fórsa trade union and the Department of Education broke down at the Workplace Relations Commission (WRC), and the issue is now before the Labour Court.

Local Fianná councillor, Seamus Coyle has called on the Department of Education to find a resolution to the conflict.

Cllr. Coyle believes that the entire sector needs to work together to provide the best possible service to the young people in the education system.

Speaking to Northern Sound, he said that secretaries and caretakers play a key role in that system.

Cllr. Coyle said: "One's education is a short period in their life. It does not need any disruption. Young people need every support from within the educational sector.

"Whether it be in a small community, or in a large city, secretaries and caretakers are a key part of the staff in that educational facility," he add.
