A local councillor has welcomed the increase in Carer's Allowance income thresholds.
Cllr Peter Conlon described it as a major step forward for carers across the region.
The changes will allow many more people to qualify for the payment, particularly those who were previously just above the income limits.
Under the new arrangements, the weekly income disregard for a single person will rise from €625 to €1,000, while the threshold for couples will increase from €1,250 to €2,000.
Cllr Conlon said these are the largest increases ever made to the Carer's Allowance means test and will provide greater financial support to carers balancing work and caring responsibilities.
He said these increased income limits recognise that carers should not be penalised for remaining in employment while continuing to provide essential care for a family member.
