Cavan and Monaghan County Councils have passed motions calling for a full debate to take place on CETA ahead of a Dáil vote on the issue.
Cavan's Shane P O'Reilly warns that the State has not had enough time to fully scrutinise it, while Monaghan's Pat Treanor says CETA "includes a threat to the freedom of Ireland to legislate"
At yesterday's meeting of Cavan County Council, Shane P O'Reilly had a motion unanimously passed which called for a Joint Oireacthas Committee to debate CETA ahead of an upcoming vote on the deal in the Dáil.
He told the meeting that Ireland could stand to get a better deal if more time is allowed to properly examine the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement between the EU and Canada.
Councillor O'Reilly added that the EU is "pushing the deal through" and the motion will now be sent to the Minister of Enterprise, Trade, and Employment, Leo Varadkar.
Meanwhile, Sinn Féin councillors brought a similar motion to Monaghan County Council, though it faced some opposition.
Sinn Féin's Pat Treanor says CETA is being "pushed through without any discussion" and he told Shannonside Northern Sound that he hopes other councils will "lobby the Irish government to scrutinise CETA":
