Local Fianna Fáil TD calls for remaining maternity restrictions to be lifted

Deputy Smyth says Directors and Masters of Maternity Hospitals "give no rhyme nor reason for the draconian rules".

A local Fianna Fáil TD has called for the remaining maternity restrictions to be lifted.

Niamh Smyth recently attended a cross-party meeting where the Health Minister, Stephen Donnelly, was asked to intervene to ensure all remaining restrictions are lifted immediately.

Deputy Smyth says unless there are clinical reasons for the restrictions, they should be lifted and revert to pre-pandemic access.

It follows comments by Tánaiste Leo Varadkar, who says he doesn't believe politicians should over-ride the judgement of staff managing maternity care.

However, Deputy Smyth says the Directors and Masters of Maternity Hospitals "give no rhyme nor reason for the draconian rules".

She told Northern Sound that she'll be raising the issue with HSE Chief Paul Reid and seek a "blanket lifting" of restrictions:
