As the summer months approach Gardaí across Cavan and Monaghan are urging locals to be mindful of house safety.
Coming into the summer houses will be more vacant due to holidays and family events and Gardai are encouraging people to always "lock up."
According to Garda Tracy Donaghy of Carrickmacross Garda Station, if you are going on holiday and your home is going to be vacant, be mindful of what you post on social media.
Even if you have enabled strict privacy settings, your holiday plans could be shared with unscrupulous people.
Most burglars are opportunists and will select the easiest target that they can find, Garda Donaghy said it's important not to offer them assistance.
This can be achieved by making your home look like it is occupied.
This can be done asking by a trusted neighbour or family member to park in your driveway, use timers on internal lights and consider motion sensor lights outside your home.
