A local garda representative has been reacting to the recent Garda stabbing in Dublin.
James Morrisroe is the Deputy General Secretary of the Garda Representative Association, he previously served in the Cavan Monaghan Garda Division.
James reacted to incident that took place on Capel Street earlier this week in which one garda was stabbed in an unprovoked attack.
23-year-old Abdullah Khan has since been charged in relation to the incident and appeared in court this morning.
He was charged with one count of assault causing harm and one count of producing a knife capable of causing harm.
The court heard he made no reply to the charges.
No application for bail was made and Mr Khan was remanded in custody to appear before Cloverhill District Court next Wednesday for DPP direction.
An application was made to the court for medical attention for Mr Khan while in custody.
Speaking to Joe Finnegan, James said the incident highlights the dangers Gardaí face.
"A very lucky young man, a probationer not long out of Templemore, and, serious injuries, stab wounds to the upper body, serious injuries. Thankfully, he's out of hospital and not in danger, but it does highlight the dangers that all members face when they put on the uniform to go out at any time of the day or night. When you look at the time that it happened and his personal protective equipment saved him. I'd say the stab vest saved him because it was damaged as well. It's something that we've been highlighting for a long time is frontline members should have tasers. If tasers were operational at that time, it may have quelled the situation a lot sooner than it did."
