Local successful candidates in 2020 General Election spent up to €21,000 on campaigns

Some successful candidates spending more than €10,000 on posters.

Successful candidates in the 2020 Dáil General Election across Cavan-Monaghan spent up to €21,000 on their campaigns.

Figures revealed in SIPO'S Election Report show that election posters made up the bulk of this spend, with some successful candidates spending more than €10,000 on them.

Fianna Fáil TD Brendan Smith spent the most on his campaign locally, at €21,605.

This included close to €10,500 on election posters, and around €4,300 on advertising in newspapers and on Facebook.

He assigned a spending limit of €18,080 to the Fianna Fáil party.

Fellow Fianna Fáil TD Niamh Smyth spent close to €18,200 on her campaign, including €2,338 euro that was met out of public funds.

Deputy Smyth assigned the same spending limit as her party colleague to Fianna Fáil, and spent €463 on cable ties for election posters and close to €300 on landlines and mobiles.

Elsewhere, Fine Gael Minister Heather Humphrey's spent just under €16,000 on her campaign, including €5,715 on election posters and €934 on transport and travel.

Minister Humphreys assigned a spending limit of more than €26,000 to Fine Gael.

Meanwhile, Sinn Féin's Matt Carthy assigned a spending limit of €10,000 to his party.

His election spend came to over €19,000, including more than €10,000 on election posters and €810 on Facebook advertising.

His party colleague, Pauline Tully, assigned spending of €15,000 to her party.

Deputy Tully's campaign spend was just under €17,000.

This included more than €11,000 on election posters and €2,663 on election advertising.]
