Cavan-Monaghan TD Matt Carthy this week engaged in a discussion at the National Ploughing Championships on Sinn Féin’s policies to manage migration.
Deputy Carthy outlined how migration must be managed based on the capacity of the state to house and integrate those who come here.
He also reiterated Sinn Féin's demand for action in relation to profiteering in the provision of IPAS accommodation.
According to Deputy Carthy, the international protection system has been in "crisis mode for years."
Deputy Carthy told Northern Sound: Sinn Féin believe that migration must be managed in the best interests of the people of Ireland, taking into account our needs in terms of workers for key sectors such as health, challenges including the housing crisis and the capacity of public services, and a humanitarian response to those fleeing war and persecution.
"We believe, at every level, both in terms of the international protection system, work permits and student permits the system must be fair and transparent and have the rules enforced.
"We want to ensure that profiteering is stamped out and that public money is not used to make millionaires out of a small number of people. There must be proper supports for integration and to tackle racism.
"As the state grapples with an ongoing crisis in housing and public services under pressure, the need for better planning in all aspects of public policy, including migration, has never been clearer."
