The Minister for Mental Health has again been called on to provide more supports in Cavan and Monaghan. There has been sadness in the region

The Minister for Mental Health has again been called on to provide more supports in Cavan and Monaghan.

There has been sadness in the region in recent months after a number of people, particularly young people, took their own lives.

Minister Mary Butler said in October that a Suicide Crisis Assessment Nurse post could be approved for the region but as of yet that hasn't happened.

A SCAN Nurse is a rapid access mental health nurse who works alongside a GP to give an assessment of at-risk people, and assist in onward referral.

The Northern Sound region has the highest suicide rates in the country.

Speaking in the Dáil today, local TD Niamh Smyth said the region needs more supports:
