Monaghan County Council call Minister to legislate new organ donation system

In our current system, you have to "opt-in".

Monaghan County Council has called on the Health Minister to legislate for a "soft opt-out" system for organ donation.

Ireland is one of several EU countries that don't implement the "opt-out" system.

The 'opt-out' system is one of "presumed consent", where someone would have to request to "opt-out", as opposed to the current system where you have to "opt-in".

The motion was passed by Councillor Colm Carthy, who first raised the issue in 2017.

Minister Stephen Donnelly previously said he intended to legislate for an opt-out system this year.

Councillor Carthy's motion calls for the proposed legislation to be passed through the "Oireachtas without further delay".

Speaking to Shannonside Northern Sound, the Sinn Féin councillor added that an information campaign should immediately accompany a change in legislation:
