Monaghan County Council is reminding people it is an offence to leave empty bottles and household rubbish beside bottle banks.

This message comes following the discovery of a number of discarded bags, and boxes of bottles by staff in recent days.

There was also broken glass on the ground around the banks, which could cause severe cuts or injury to those maintaining them.

The council has stated that CCTV is in operation at bottle banks throughout the county and anyone found to be leaving their rubbish outside them could receive a fine of 150 euro.

They are also asking that if any member of the public finds banks full on arrival to contact the Monaghan County Council environmental services.
