Co Monaghan will host the 2026 Annual Lions Club Ireland Convention for the first time ever this weekend.
The national convention also coincides with Monaghan Lions Club celebrating 35 years since its inception here in the Farney County.
The local club is made up of 30 members from different backgrounds who raise funds for charities and organisations locally.
John Smith is the current Vice President and Secretary of the Monaghan Lions Club.
John told Northern Sound that the club focuses on areas such as special needs, addiction, homelessness, cancer support, dementia support, food bank appeals, counselling services and overall care of the elderly.
However, John admitted that the annual food back appeal at Christmas always holds a special place in his heart.
This year volunteers delivered 277 food hampers to local people.
John said that around 37% of the club's spend last year also went to hardship cases.
To mark the 35 year milestone, an event will take place this evening to honour members past and present.
Speaking to Northern Sound, John said "we have a very vibrant club made of up of people who brings their own talents and energy to it.
He said being a member is extremely worthwhile and rewarding, particularly when you helping those who are experiencing a difficult time in their lives.
