An Garda Síochána continues to appeal to drivers to comply with speed limits.

Over 5,200 vehicles have been checked for speeding within the first two hours of National Slow Down Day today. Of those, GoSafe detected 40 drivers travelling over the speed limit. One motorist was found doing 83 km/h in a 60 zone on the Dublin Road in Cavan Town, another was caught travelling at 130 km/h in a 100 zone on the N4 in Westmeath, while one driver in Ballinglanna in Cork was stopped while doing a speed of 145 km/h in a 120 zone.

Gardaí are also warning against drink or drug driving on Go Slow Day today. Over 500 drivers have been arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of an intoxicant in the last three weeks. The force's road safety enforcement for Christmas and the New Year will run until January 4th. An Garda Síochána continues to appeal to drivers to comply with speed limits in order to reduce the number of speed related collisions, save lives and reduce injuries on our roads.
