Minister for Rural and Community Development, Heather Humphreys, has today officially opened a Biodiversity Walkway approximately 950m in length and 2.5m wide around the perimeter of a new football pitch owned by CLG Cuchulainn and an older pitch owned by Mullagh Community Park Development Ltd. and bordering a section of Mullagh Lough Stream. The construction of a safe, environmentally friendly amenity access will complete the access to the biodiversity walkway, by providing designated disabled parking, parent and children parking, bus parking and general parking.

Additional facilities include an outdoor classroom space to allow student carry out ecological/river and natural fieldwork exercises while the swale, rainwater garden and permeable paving will channel run off from the car park area and roof of the adjacent sports centre into a shallow drainage channel/pool. The positive and educational effects of this easily accessible and free walkway have benefitted a wide range of demographics considering, age, race, gender, disability and socio-economic factors and plays its part in the development of social cohesion in the area. Minister Humphreys says this biodiversity walkway is exactly the kind of locally-led project that could be replicated right across Ireland.
