Betting odds on Heather Humphreys to become the next president of Ireland has been slashed.
Odds on the former minister taking the top job have dropped as low as 3/1 in most bookmakers following the withdrawal of Mairead McGuinness from the presidential race.
Heather Humphreys has yet to indicate whether she will make a bid at become the next president of Ireland but we understand she is considering the bid following the shock announcement by Mairead McGuinness to leave the race on health grounds on Thursday.
Northern Sound FM reported yesterday that at least one senior minister from Fine Gael met with the former Cavan Monaghan TD tonight in Co Monaghan to discuss the prospect of her putting her name on the ballot paper.
Ms Humphreys ruled out a bid for the Aras back at the end of May on the Joe Finnegan Show following a period of time considering the idea of putting her name in the hat for the job.
Over the past 24 hours a number of independent TD’s have come out to show their support towards the Monaghan native.
RTE News reported earlier that Independent TDs Noel Grealish and Seán Canney have expressed their support for Heather Humphreys in any potential presidential bid.
Yesterday, Minister Michael Healy Rae expressed his support in the local woman, highlighting that she would make a great president.
The former Cavan-Monaghan TD has been contacted for comment but there has been no response to date.
The Fine Gael national executive is set to meet in the coming days.
