Only five out of the 100 mainstream primary schools across Cavan and Monaghan are Gaelscoileanna, that's according to data from the Department of Education & Youth’s Primary School Survey.
The department recently carried out a survey in response to a growing narrative that parents want change when it comes to education.
The survey asked if parents in the area would like to send their child to an Irish speaking school.
13.5% of Cavan and Monaghan parents voted for this option which translates to an estimated 2,245 children who currently have no access to a Gaelscoil.
According to the survey, over 2,200 primary school children in the Cavan / Monaghan area are unable to access a Gaelscoil.
