Over 40 per cent of prisoners across Cavan and Monaghan reoffended within one year of being released.
That's according to new figures released by the Central Statistics Office for 2023.
According to the findings, the highest levels of re-offending from people who were released from custody in 2023 were among young adults under 21 years of age.
In the Northern Sound region, 85 prisoners were released in 2023 - 25 in Co. Monaghan, and 60 in Co. Cavan.
Of these, 36 were convicted of a crime within one year after their release from custody.
According to the CSO, this brought the rate of reoffending in Monaghan to 44 per cent, while in Cavan, it was 42 per cent.
Regionally, the highest rates of re-offending in 2023 continued to take place in the Mid-West area, at 52 per cent, consisting of Clare, Limerick, and Tipperary.
