There were over 8,000 homes across Cavan and Monaghan within the private rental market as of April 2022.
According to the CSO, homes rented from private landlords showed a 12% increase from 3,062 to 3,420 in Monaghan. While homes rented in Cavan from private landlords showed a 11% increase from 4,171 to 4,614.
In Monaghan, the number of homes rented in the 65 and over age group was 167 (which was a 80% increase). In the 60 to 64 age group, it was up 136% compared with 69% nationally. In Cavan, the number of homes rented in the 65 and over age group was 321 (which was a 104% increase) and in the 60 to 64 age group, it was up 76%.
There was a significant increase of 83% (up to almost 17,000 households) in the number of over 65s renting from a private landlord in the State. Census 2022 shows that by the age of 35, more than half of householders in Monaghan owned their own home (with or without a mortgage or loan). Nationally this age was 36
While the results show that by the age of 33, more than half of householders in Cavan owned their own home (with or without a mortgage or loan). Nationally more than 330,000 homes were rented from a private landlord, an increase of 7% since 2016.
