'The challenges with the cost of living makes it more important than ever for people to claim back money they are entitled to'

Thousands of people across the Shannonside Northern sound region are missing out on rebates from Revenue by not claiming their tax back.

That's according to Senator Robbie Gallagher, who says that given the current challenges with the cost of living, it is more important than ever for people to claim back money they are entitled to.

He said there are a wide range of allowances, and exemptions under which claims can be made with average rebates in the region of €800.

These include charitable contributions; child tax credit; sick leave for self-employed individuals; family leave for self-employed individuals; student loan interest deduction; and tuition and fees deductions.

Senator Gallagher also highlighted how €14,000 tax free can be earned by renting a room in a home.

"This is a very important scheme and Revenue is of the opinion that not many people are aware of it," he continued.

"Anyone living in the family home with a spare room or two in the house can rent out a room and get up to €14,000 per annunm tax free for that room.

"However, there is one thing to bear in mind.

"It the rent goes over €14,000, Revenue will tax the entire amount."
