A ring boy was stolen and burned at the town lake in Bailieborough over the weekend.
The act of vandalism took place at an area known locally as 'The Island'.
Cllr Paddy McDonald said local people are very upset over an act such as this being carried out on what is essentially a life saving piece of equipment.

He added how there needs to be more Gardai on the beat and highlighted the need for CCTV in the town to deter such behaviour.
Cllr McDonald is appealing to people not to engage in acts of vandalism on public property.
"I am appealing to people not to vandalise property that is in public spaces," he added.

"It is there for everybody, not just one particular group of people.
"And, it's there for the young and the old."
