According to Senator Robbie Gallagher, people could end up going into nursing homes sooner than they would like to, or else unable to be discharged from hospital because no homecare package is in place.

Concerns over the shortage of carers across Cavan and Monaghan is something that needs to be "addressed with urgency."

That's according to Senator Robbie Gallagher, who recently raised the matter in the Seanad.

According to Senator Robbie Gallagher, in Cavan and Monaghan, over 250 people are waiting on a homecare package.

50 of that total are waiting for first time packages, while over 200 are waiting for additional hours, with some having to wait over 12 months for this.

Speaking to Northern Sound, Senator Gallagher revealed that while homecare hours were increased by Government to meet demand, the problem is that there isn't enough carers now to carry out those packages.

He added that older people are happier and live longer in their own homes, and that homecare packages are "essential" in supporting older people in continuing to live in their communities.
