A special event to mark the 83rd anniversary of Cavan's worst disaster will take place this weekend.
A event remembers the 35 children and one adult whose lives were claimed by the St Joseph’s Orphanage fire on February 23rd 1943.
Cavan Orphanage Memorial Committee have organised a short remembrance event at the graveside in Cullies graveyard this Sunday at 2 pm.
Everyone is welcome to come along particularly relatives of the 36 lost in the orphanage fire. Sean Galligan from the committee said that night a fire started but we're not sure exactly what caused it.
He said it probably started in the laundry underneath the floors of the dormitories. The girls on the lower dormitory were evacuated successfully but unfortunately the ones on the top two dormitories were trapped. Sean says the event this weekend is about reflecting and remembering all who lost their lives on that horrific night.
