'The festival will kick-start at 3pm this Saturday with donations going towards local mental health charities'

Spudfest 2023 will take place in Monaghan town this weekend. The event is held in memory of Jason 'Spud' McElvaney who passed away two years ago.

Ciara Lenane is one of the organisers and says Saturday's line-up of events is something that "all the family" can enjoy.

This year, the festival activities begin at 3pm this Saturday in McKenna's Bar with a family fun themed day of activities and entertainment with charity headshaves, carnival games, face painting, open mic performances along with musical entertainment throughout the day showcasing local talent.

With activities due to begin from 3pm onwards, Ciara told Northern Sound that the event is about much more than fun activities and alternative music.

With a festival committee now set-up in the hopes of supporting mental health services in Monaghan, Ciara hopes this event will promote mental health awareness and suicide prevention, particularly amongst younger people who are vulnerable in society.

Speaking to Northern Sound, Ciara believes it is "important" to bring about change and break down the stigma which is attached to mental health.

She added that Spudfest is about encouraging people to talk about their mental health on a regular basis and to feel supported in taking that first step in seeking help.
