Staff at a Cavan nursing home have been described as friendly, caring, and respectful in a new report.
An unannounced inspection was carried out at the Virginia Community Health Centre in May of this year. The designated centre run by the HSE provides 24 hour nursing care to 56 residents, both male and female who require long-term and short-term care.
The centre is a two storey extended building located on a greenfield site in Virginia, Co.Cavan. On the day of inspection, inspectors noted that residents appeared safe and comfortable in the home. Staff and residents were seen to have good humoured banter throughout the day. Residents were supported to personalise their bedrooms, with items such as photographs and artwork to help them feel comfortable and at ease in the home. The food was also complimented by residents, however inspectors felt that the dining experience was not a social occasion with many residents sat on their own. Visitors spoken to were very complementary of the staff and the care that their family members received. However a number of non-compliances were noted by inspectors. They noted a lack of staff, a lack of updated training for staff, and a
number of fire safety risks including the absence of directional signage to external assembly points, poor external emergency lighting and inappropriate wedging open of fire doors. In its response contained in the report, the centre say a number of vacant posts have now been advertised, a review of staffing procedures is currently underway, and additional signage and emergency lighting have now been installed to address fire safety risks.
