'Buses not running for health and safety reasons'

Back roads and secondary routes are in a treacherous condition across Cavan and Monaghan this morning after a night of freezing temperatures and snowfall.

The N55 throughout Co Cavan has been salted while caution is being advised on the N54 Butlers Bridge to Monaghan town due to icy patches along the route.

Meanwhile, there are reports of school closures and cancelled bus runs across Co Monaghan.

St Tiernach's primary school in Clones will close today while Conlon Travel's school run will not operate - however, the Clones to Monaghan run did depart at 7:30am.

Scotshouse National School is also closed today as is Largy College in Clones; and Carrigallen Vocational School has informed Northern Sound that it too is closing today because buses are not running.
