ANPR cameras operated by Cavan Roads Gardaí yesterday detected two uninsured drivers.
In one of the cases, when gardaí pulled over a motorist following the ANPR alert, they conducted a roadside drugs test and the driver tested positive for cannabis.
Automatic Number Plate Recognition technology is used in Garda vehicles on patrol to read number plates of motorists. Offences like not having insurance can be picked up as the number plate is cross-referenced with the national garda database.
Yesterday, Cavan Roads Policing Unit had ANPR alerts for no insurance twice. Gardaí could discern that one of the drivers had cancelled their insurance. The driver who tested positive for cannabis was arrested.
